Defect but repairable, otherwise neat.

Disappointed with the quality of the device. After installation, the device made a loud grinding/grinding noise when turned on. At high flame speed, a sound occurred every 5 seconds, and at low flame speed, a sound occurred every 17 seconds. As this is a large product I didn't want to bother with a return so I inspected the unit and found that the flame arrester was kinked inwards. I didn't want to take the block apart in case I decide to return it later, so I decided to flash it. Have found that when the bottom center of the flame arrester frame separates from the back wall of the block by 1 7/16" (3/16" movement) the rubbing noise goes away, so I cut out a small piece of 2x4 (because the actual thickness is about 1 1/2" to use as a spacer and insert under the bottom plate of the flame arrestor. This eliminated the friction noise and is not visible; the unit has been used for several hours and the noise has not returned. It is doubtful if the item I received was new. It looked like new except there were handprints on the back window. There is a distinct hum from the flame engine when working without the heater. The noise would be comparable to the noise of B. a running one Computer or a quiet fridge Noise doesn't bother me as the computer in my office is always on, but using it in the bedroom while sleeping might be worth considering is acceptable and seems to be like any other device I've ever come across. The heating capacity for my room was pretty good. I use this in my 11x13ft home office. The office is in my basement and is soundproofed with solid doors; Wooden floors on concrete to let the cold penetrate the ground. We placed the thermometer on the opposite wall from the heater and turned on the heater; The main HVAC for my house was off and it was night time so no other variables were contributing to the heat. The room was 68.2 at the start, 69.2 after 30 minutes, 70.6 after 60 minutes. The room was noticeably hotter than 70.6 halfway or even 3/4 way across the room from the heater so the unit warmed the room well. The flames don't look real, but I didn't expect them to look like my real gas fireplaces; I haven't seen one that looks real yet. I think it adds a nice vibe and can't say anything bad about the look. I wish it had a setting to switch colors randomly, but I knew it didn't have that before I bought it. The crystalline embers reflect back onto the flame screen depending on the viewing angle, but again that's to be expected from this type of product I think. Installation was very easy as it mounts to the wall like a flat screen TV. The mounting bracket comes with drywall anchors, but the pre-drilled holes on the bracket were 16" centered, so I used some screws I had in the garage and attached the bracket directly to the studs. When installed on the wall, the total depth to the glass surface was as much as 4 inches. I don't normally write reviews but as this was a larger item and I've had trouble returning larger items I thought I'd share my experience and hope it was helpful. I gave this product a low rating as I think a new product shouldn't require troubleshooting and repairs, but other than that it would be a good product for the price.

Pros
  • Easy installation
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
