Lost photos that cannot be retaken

After inserting the SD card it was recognized and working fine until the next day I looked at some of the photos I took in the photo gallery and they were all corrupt. It wouldn't be too bad but my grandson's pictures were at his birthday party and they couldn't be repeated. I tried saving apps from phone storage to a new SD card and they got corrupted too. I'm not sure if this was representative of the SD card in general or if I just got a bad one. much luck.
