Insufficient cooling for hot drives

Considering the fan version. s in OS X with a Seagate ST8000VN0022 8TB drive), the interface seems stable (no errors for 8 hours of continuous file copying - not always the case with USB3 drive interfaces). minus, depending on your use case). Cons: No SMART support, so you can't query hard drive temperature or set up an automatic slowdown. Cooling really isn't enough. The fan is very quiet, but doesn't move much air either. After riding my ride in a 70Β°F house all night, it was too hot to touch. After measuring the temperature with an IR hair dryer, the temperature on the underside of the drive was 57Β°C, which is almost higher than the manufacturer's stated maximum temperature (above which voids the warranty) of 60Β°C. Note that modern drives internally record the maximum observed temperature. So in this case, if your drive overheats and you send it back under warranty, it may not be honored. Note that the drive I'm using has a relatively high power consumption of 9.0W. Bottom powered drives may perform better but given the negligible cooling I would recommend avoiding this dock for sustained use. And I really recommend staying away from a fanless dock.
