After watching a number of videos on YouTube about recording techniques over time, I decided to put some parts on a CD. I secured a decent three head deck and prepped it with a good cleaning and new straps. But what about the carrier? I thought it would be great to compare in and out for Type 0, Type I and Type II cartridges (I really don't want to do Type IV unless someone offers some for free). Type 0 is pretty much junk, and neither is Type I hard to find. Type II, on the other hand, is somewhat sparser. Are the Maxell XLII the pinnacle of Type II recording media? Maybe not, but they're pretty much typical of the "typical" chrome strap you could buy back then. Despite being new, old stock, my package arrived as an unopened block of tape. So far I've used two for my experiments and they appear to be in good condition with no dust or chips. In terms of performance, they're pretty good in my Nakamichi. I pump them by +5/+6. there are distortions about it. Type II tapes are a good way to deal with noise without resorting to any of the NR strategies. The price of Type II tape is prohibitive to the point where you probably don't want to stock up, but I think it's nice to have some (you know, just like that). highlighted.
