Can't comment on durability as I just bought these for my kids. I have a 6 year old boy (on the smaller side) and an 8 year old daughter. I ordered both in size 7-9. They are not ideal as shin guards if you put on a sock, then put on the shin guard and lower the sock to cover the shin guard and hold it in place. For my boys, the sock cover covers most (but not all) of the protection - it would be great if the sock was a bit longer. Since I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out the size, I decided to post this size so others can understand the size.
