Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very good for the price but could be better - not plug and play

I bought the 9.2 system over the 2020 black friday weekend. I wanted to wait until I had used it for at least a full month before reviewing the product. . I opened the box and completed setup on January 3, 2021. Hoping to make this review more complete and helpful, I am giving it a star rating and dividing the review into 5 separate sections as indicated in the CAP LOCKS below: 1 - PACKAGING (5 stars) The sound system was well packaged and protected. The box fitted perfectly and included well written and comprehensive instructions for setting up the sound system and troubleshooting. The kit contains all the cables needed to operate the sound system. It also includes links and links to online resources. Nakamichi has nothing to envy to bigger companies/brands in this matter. Well done! 2 - SETUP (3 stars) I am considering this based on the expectations of people who want a plug and play system that works out of the box without errors. Although Nakamichi provides very clear installation instructions including images/photos, this sound system is NOT plug and play. After completing the setup, by following simple steps, I noticed that the speakers weren't working properly; in particular, the sound from the speakers was intermittent rather than constant. There were also crackling random noises. Also, my home Wi-Fi network almost stopped working, causing my internet speed to drop from 700 Mbps to less than 100 Mbps. After further research, I found that the sound system needed a firmware update (which requires owning or purchasing a USB stick with specific specs) to fix and potentially resolve this issue. Then I did an update, but the problems continued. Then I realized that I needed to enable the new "dedicated frequency" mode, which should have solved the problem. This certainly helped, but it still affected the home Wi-Fi network. As a last resort, I decided to restart the sound system, which seemed to work. When I placed the soundbar in front of my 65" LG OLED TV, the soundbar was too high and blocked about 1.5" from my TV so I had to buy a stand to make my TV higher (not good, as I believe this can be prevented). the product design phase). Well it took me about 4 days to complete the setup and go through all the troubleshooting steps that finally allowed me to use and test the sound system. 3 - FIRST 45 DAYS OF USE (4 stars) When this sound system is working properly and without Wi-Fi glitches, it does a pretty good job of battling the Bose and Sony sound systems I've had before. When watching Dolby Atmos 2 content, the rear speakers tend to lose sound entirely for a few seconds from time to time, which dulls the experience a bit (I believe this is due to a conflict with the 5GHz I mentioned -Wi-Fi network in the Settings section above). Content other than Atmos (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.) works quite well and the sound quality is very good. I also tested the Bluetooth mode, which I don't really like as it mainly uses the soundbar and doesn't take advantage of the other satellite 4 speakers. Initially I connected the PlayStation and cable box to the soundbar's HDMI ports, but later decided to connect these devices directly to the TV, since I had to turn on the sound system every time I wanted to use the connected devices, but there were times when where I didn't want to use the sound system. 4 - SOUND AND HARDWARE QUALITY (4 stars) I think the sound quality is 5 stars if it works without the wifi signal issues mentioned above. The soundbar's display could certainly be better, perhaps the soundbar could have a small touchscreen display instead of the small LEDs. The remote control is ok, but in my opinion it could be simpler or have the option to use the mobile app as a remote control for more advanced functions. Satellite speakers require stands, I have purchased 27-48 inch Atlantic satellite speaker stands that fit them. The speaker construction appears to be of good quality, but the subwoofers are the star of the show. The subwoofers are well made and deliver excellent bass (unfortunately I can't fully exploit the bass power as I live in an apartment and next door). If Nakamichi is considering redesigning a future model, he should consider not making the soundbar as tall and maybe dreaming up a flatter design. To date (February 21), audio from the rear satellite speakers was still intermittent and inconsistent at various points in the film. I wish that wasn't the case and I could just enjoy consistent Dolby Atmos sound. However, it's still a better experience than watching a movie and using the TV's speakers. I hope Nakamichi releases a software update that finally fixes this intermittent audio loss from the rear satellite speakers and completely eliminates the 5GHz WiFi signal conflict between the wireless speakers and your 5GHz home WiFi network. As I have to learn to live with these constant issues that degrade user experience, I had to rate this section 3 stars.
