Handy device for the home

Handy little device for the home. It has its limits, which are good given the price. Things that are good for: - Locating hot water pipes, drain pipes, and HVAC ducts through drywall - Locating large temperature differences across walls and floors - Locating electrical lines that are under load - Locating electrical loads that are producing more heat than expected. Why isn't it good for: - replacing appropriate commercial/professional equipment - detecting air leaks around glass doors or windows - detecting air leaks that don't have a big temperature difference (spring and autumn are useless as the temperature isn't harsh ) - Capturing high-resolution images of the visible spectrum (the display doesn't really show much image detail) - Constant color display of temperature This device allowed me to locate leaks in the basement that were visually hidden by the existing insulation. It is very obvious when looking at the various exterior walls and ceilings where insulation is/is missing. In the summer, I clearly notice that I need more insulation in the attic on the west side of the house and along the edge beam of the basement. During the summer months at 7:00 p.m., temperatures at the West End's edge bar were well above 100Β°F. Hot water pipes and air ducts were also quickly identified through drywall. The same applies to power lines that draw higher currents. I could see the path of the power lines feeding the outlet my toaster was plugged into when it was in use. I was hoping this would help track down the leaks around my windows and doors. It is impossible. The glass just throws it away and you can't get a good picture or read around it. Another issue is the color scale used to represent temperature ranges. He's bouncing around, so what's purple on one wall might be 65F, and on another wall 5 feet away it might be 45F. It appears to base its range on the temporal propagation currently observed. So I usually put my finger on the bottom edge of the image to stabilize it a bit.
