However, this is not because he brushes his teeth. The bacteria in your mouth that cause tooth decay feed on sugar. When they come into contact with xylitol, they eat it, but it's basically like a bird eating a plastic bag: it looks like food, but it kills the animal and prevents it from doing its job. As such, xylitol gum is only good for your teeth because it kills bacteria that would otherwise thrive on sugar-filled gum. I'm not a dentist, but it seems to me that this is not enough for the teeth. Toothpaste. Who knows, maybe that's it. I have very good oral hygiene, so I feel like I can risk using a toothpaste that just kills bacteria for a few months. So I will continue to use this until my next dentist visit in four months and then I will ask my dentist for her opinion on both the effectiveness of the xylitol based toothpaste and this toothpaste in particular.
