I bought these gloves primarily to wear during dirty activities and also as a "beauty glove" to soak lotion into my dry hands. I didn't need a tight glove as I sometimes even sleep with lotion on my hands, so I ordered a larger one (I have a woman with a size 7 ring finger). This size is quite loose on me, coming down a few inches below my wrist. For my purposes these gloves are thick enough; no problems with protruding nails. If I had to wear them for precision work I would definitely buy the medium ones rather than the large ones so my fingertips fit properly. They are totally disposable quality, so don't expect to use the same pair for a long time or more than once.
