the smell of trash still seems to be absent unless one is standing.

Our bedroom doesn't seem to smell of trash unless you're standing inches from the diaper pail. Non-biodegradable materials hide odors even at close range, but I think whenever we can compromise for the environment and our long-term survival when the impact in terms of inconvenience is negligible, we do so. The biodegradable version's odor control is definitely effective for those who live more than 5 inches from the diaper pail.
