I bought this extension to get the same "just one cable" effect you get with a MacBook made LG 4K Ultra Fine monitor with my existing not-so-fancy monitor . I connected an Apple USB-C Multiport Digital AV Adapter to the back of the monitor and connected power, HDMI and USB devices to it so everything was out of sight, then I run this extension out the side so everything I need , which connects to my 2017 15" MacBook Pro with TouchBar is an extension cable. Unexpected bonus: the cable matches my car's "space gray" color *perfectly*. However, like others, I had a bit of trouble with it at first Cable.I found at first that it only supported power - I couldn't get it to stream video through the adapter plugged in. However, I eventually found that the orientation (which side up) of the cable connector did matter for some reason It also doesn't seem to matter which of the 4 USB-C ports on my MacBook I plug the e-cable into, but now that the seam of the connector is facing down and the cable plugged into the left port closest to the screen, it works perfectly and is stable every time.
