Calculate voltage drop!

Don't repeat my mistake. My well has a static water level of 92 feet. I put the pump 130 feet down the well. First I installed it with 14ga wires. I bought 14ga cable believing it was 120 volts. The pump draws 10 amps. 14ga cable is enough for 10 amps, but. I didn't account for the voltage drop across the 135 foot cable. The pump worked very poorly after the initial installation. It only pumped about 1/4 gallon per minute. After thinking about it, I calculated the voltage drop and found that the pump would only get 6 volts through my wire! I took the 10 ga cable, lifted the pump and ran a new cable. 10ga gives me a 2.5 volt drop. I use my truck to start the pump, so the input is 14 volts. The pump is now getting 11.5 volts after 135 feet of wire. The pump is now working fairly well, pumping about 1.3 GPM. The new problem is that it repeats itself. The thermal protection seems to be very sensitive on this pump. It works for about 5 minutes at first and then turns off for about 1 minute. It then runs shorter and shorter until it starts to level off after about 1 minute and flattens out after 1 minute. That's fine for my application, but keep this in mind for your application. I still gave 4 stars despite cycling because it's so cheap.
