I have used another similar product where the strap itself could not be detached. The ability to snap is such a handy feature on this one. It's comfortable, I usually wear it on my forearm when running, walking or hiking. I like it when my fingers don't get in the way of the touchscreen. The rubber straps are pretty tight and I don't have one of those huge new phones either, mine has a 4.7 inch screen but I think it adds reassurance that the phone won't slip out.
