Review on ๐Ÿ” Enhanced JVC DLA-NX7 D-ILA Projector: Elevating Performance for Better Results by Scott Snyder

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best projector under $10k and one of the best projectors under $20k

I bought mine in mid 2019. Firmware update 3.10 added "Dynamic Tone Mapping" for HDR, which means you can watch any 4k HDR source (that has NO luminance standard) and it's very easy to distinguish between dark and light parts of the picture. No other projector on the market has this capability which means some movies/shows will look very dark and washed out. The only other solution for other projectors is to use an external device before the projector sees the signal. I have an anamorphic lens (Paladin DCR) that uses full brightness (2.4:1 instead of 16:9) when watching ultra wide angle movies. Lens storage is excellent. Black levels are excellent, although not as good as my previous JVC rs540/790r. The low lamp mode is quiet (remember that for good blacks the room has to be dark!). 4K is real and sharp! I'm sure most people looking at this projector have done their own research or taken advice. Just know that this is almost objectively the best sub-$10,000 projector in 2020, and even projectors over $20,000 often don't look that great unless they're professionally calibrated and have the aforementioned additional processor (for HDR). ). The only real advance would be a laser projector with similar capabilities. At the moment the only laser options listed above are the JVC RS4500 (no HDR DTM built in) and Sony vw885, 915 and 995 or higher (none have HDR DTM built in). Again, they all cost over $20,000, not to mention the extra processing required for this JVC NX7/rs2000. Another plus, JVC's auto calibration is very handy and gives very decent results when using the SpyderX for gamma and the i1 Pro 2 for colour. (Yes, a professional ISF calibration gives the best results). Pros: EVERYTHING I just mentioned above. Cons: It's not a laser and the lamp will gradually dim over time (replacement lamps are inexpensive)

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Doubtful
