I have 4 cats, 3 medium and 1 Maine Coon. I have two "new versions" that are huge improvements over the original (I only had issues with the original). t exactly set and forget, but close enough. I use Tidy Cats Lightweight Performance Clumping Litter to reduce: - Likelihood of plastic abrasion. (Heavy debris and large clumps of urine seem too strong for the gears.) - There is a chance of large clumps pressing down on the ramp cover (disabling the device). - More debris can be safely added to the bowl. a cardboard "shield" between bowl and hopper to prevent dirt getting into the gears (pics) and it really should be like that from the factory. And your mileage may vary, but I had to put a backstop on the bowl because my Maine Coon keeps popping right off the edge of the bowl. Also, you will need to clean the rim of the bowl every 2 days to remove any accumulated wet residue that is not scraped off the conveyor. It takes me 2 days to fill up the bins so I do this every time I empty them. The original version had a larger feed neck that scraped the edges better, but this caused the neck to constantly get stuck. This is a satisfactory solution to this problem. With this setup I haven't had a single bug in over a year of continuous use of my first redesigned box. The second works 3 months without problems.
