People have unrealistic expectations of these avocado preservers. There are numerous reviews in which the author complains that these devices do nothing better than a plastic bag. You're probably right, and the reason is that the storage mechanisms in the box and in this device are exactly the same. The purpose of these guards is to minimize air contact with the surface of the avocado to minimize oxidation. Both do the same thing, so you should expect similar performance. This gadget is useful because it helps store my soft avocado in a hard storage box. It's a hard casing that protects the avocado, doesn't ruin or mess up the bag, it's really easy to clean and will probably last the avocado for about 2 days if you get a nice clean cut and smooth finish. Will it prevent 100% oxidation of the avocado even for 24 hours? No it won't. But nothing will, so forget your complaints. This item costs $4 and does a great job of holding, protecting, and preserving half an avocado for the short amount of time you need.
