I have 34 waist and 43 hips. I ordered an M to be on the safe side. I would be fine with S, but M is perfectly fine. TO UPDATE! I've just come back from a beach with a strong current. I happily did somersaults in the wild waves, and thanks to the elastic band with a drawstring, the shorts stayed in place! At one point I thought my pants were about to come off my body, but I just waited longer and was able to get started.
