Breaking News: Experienced aquarists know that there is no need to use unnecessary disposable filters Your filter is telling you to use it. Instead, you can replace those filters with something like this that is both biologically and mechanically much more efficient and will last for years. No, you don't need activated carbon unless you have a problem in Your aquarium that requires its use - such as removing medication from the tank. And it only "activates" for a short time. For a day. So the rest of the time this disposable filter is a precision engineered filter, full of dirt Open Cell Styrofoam at 20 PPI is great for breeding nitrifying bacteria that keep fish alive by breaking down their waste into safer compounds. You know the rule: amm jac will converted to nitrite. nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate is safer than any nitrite. or ammonia, but it still needs to be removed by regular water changes. I am currently using this product in my Fluval Flex 9 which has a Neriti snail, four Amano shrimp, a small flock of smoldering tetras and ball peas. This type of aquarium is designed to be flexible - let the owner try/use different types of environments. The rear of the aquarium is separate from the visible area in front and divided into three fairly large sections measuring approximately 2" by 4" by 12". And the water must take a tortuous path up and down through all environments. until it is pumped back into the tank. I cut and put two pieces of this styrofoam in the first compartment. The second compartment has a coarser foam, some Sera Siporax and some crushed coral to keep the tank at the right pH level to keep my snails and shrimp happy. The third compartment contains the pump and heater. This material is good at filtering out larger particles, leaving the rest of the media relatively clean. I haven't noticed any problems with the pump pushing the water through the system. On the contrary, it seems to work better. So I have no idea what happened to the other reviewer. Maybe his pump was smaller and weaker. This foam is very easy to clean. I take a fresh bucket of water, dechlorinate it to be on the safe side and keep pushing the foam into the water, it becomes like dirt. The foam serves its purpose. I've been using this type of foam for a very long time. It takes time. And it lasts. If this foam were two inches thick instead of one inch, I would use it to install a Hamburgh Matten (HMF) filter - in my opinion this is the best way to filter an aquarium. Google it if you're setting up a new tank and have never heard of it. I have a 2 inch foam very similar to this one except at 30 PPI that filters 20 longs filled with 10 mystery snails, a few amano shrimp and about a hundred or more blue dream shrimp. I also plant my tanks hard. Nitrate is very low, although mysterious snails are pigs and produce a lot of waste. I think that price (now twenty) is too much. I want to see about half. However, this product is highly recommended for experienced aquarists. The amount you spend now will pay off for years to come if you don't have to buy crappy and ill-designed disposable filters.
