These needles are fine, but finer threads have worked for me. I am currently using embroidery machine thread, silver. I started with tatting thread to experiment with size 80 and it didn't work. Remember that these needles are 0.5mm and the thread needs to be smaller to hook well. The thread fell out when I picked it up. I have Luneville needles and these are my first Aari needles and I bought a set of all 3 styles. I bought them to make custom laces for ballet costumes. The Luneville needles kept getting addicting so I gave these a try. I have found that working with the light, shining on my needle helps me see if I'm turning it far enough to avoid snagging on Luneville and Aari needles. Also, using the embroidery hoop was a disaster, and I made a hoop frame for the tie rods out of cheap Walmarts canvas. I removed the canvas and applied strips of fabric to attach my work fabric to and pull taut. It all helps how these needles work.
