I bought this printer to replace a Brother MFC8910DW which was very good when it worked but was prone to errors including drum breakage and drum error message. I received the MFCL5900DW to give Brother another chance. Speed: Initial boot time to first print appears to be around 2 seconds slower on the MFCL5900DW compared to the older MFC8910DW. Once the printing starts, the speed of the MFCL5900DW is very fast. Installation: I installed the MFCL5900DW in my office with 8 computers. Installation was painful. Use the CD to install the setup file or download it from the website. To install on Windows 7 with a non-administrative account, extract the files to a folder. Right click on "InstUI" and "Run as administrator" to install. Please note that after each installation the printer will crash and a big red X will appear on the printer. You must unplug the printer power cord for each device you install to restart it. On a Windows 8 computer, you must be logged in as an administrator for the installation. I had to unplug the printer eight times to install it on all eight machines. If you work for a large company and need to install the MFCL5900DW, this is a disaster. Print quality: excellent. No complaints. The copy quality is better than the old MFC8910DW. LCD screen: I can do without a color LCD screen. I have fluorescent lighting above the MFCL5900DW and the glare is making the color LCD screen difficult to read (see attached images). In the first image, glare occurs when the overhead light is on. light when that particular light is off). Reading the old b/w screen on the older model is much easier. Also, I don't like the lack of buttons on the newer model. Price/Imprint: When calculating the price/imprint it is important to include the cost of the drum in the price. Some models, like the Canon MFC, have a built-in drum. On the other hand, the Brother MFC has drum and toner in separate packages. As of 4/10/2016, the TN850 High Yield Toner Cartridge cost $112.91/8,000 pages and the DR820 Imaging Drum cost $133.39/30,000 pages. For 32,000 pages, that's $133.39 (1 drum) + $112.91 x 4 (toners) = $113.39 + $451.64 = $565.03 for 32,000 pages. The average is 1.77 cents per page. Updated 06/27/16. After a few months of use I found it reliable. Upgraded it to 4 stars. Installation errors are still a big problem. However, the prints come out clean and fast. Update 12/06/16: Today a drum replacement warning appeared. The drum change warning appeared after the 5th toner change after the first start toner. I ordered a replacement TN850 toner in April (1), May (2), June (3), August (4), October (5) and November (6). I just installed October TN850 (5th). November TN850 (6th) I have a spare. So far I am happy with this printer.
