I had the same problems as others: The optical mouse doesn't see the red background. I tried the lines with a black marker but it didn't work for me. I put the corner of a thin mouse pad in the center and it kind of worked, but it wasn't reliable. The only thing I did that eventually worked for me was offset the ribbon 2/4 from the center to the center of the red plastic circle and it worked. This gives the mouse some physical movement, and the optical mouse is likely to see the masking tape. So my computer is finally happy with how it was hacked. He works clocks with quarters glued in the middle.
