I have no idea what they mean by thickness but I love this unit so much that I can say it is perfect in every way. I originally bought it for another purpose, but it wasn't suitable for that (guinea pig litter). However, I've found it's great for a lot of other quick cleanups. For example: popcorn or cookie crumbs on a freshly cleaned carpet, dust from lampshades, rubbing on sofa cushions. I clean often, but this little kid finds dust I didn't know about. But my favorite use was when I spilled a tray of tiny beads. Started crying then decided to give it a try. It was absolutely perfect for rounding them up quickly. Just make sure you empty it after each use! I haven't used it on my desk but I'm sure it will work great. I will be ordering more for Christmas gifts.
