Such a simple but effective design. A larger base can be used to install nuts and is most likely designed for larger nuts. I only split hickory nuts and the size seems smaller than what this particular nutcracker was designed for. They crack as soon as you can carefully hold the nut in the exact position needed to keep it from falling out under pressure. Torque is top-notch, and there's no overall strain on your hands, but do it over a bowl or wrap it in a towel, or wise slivers of nuts end up all over the place. You can control this by applying pressure very slowly, but again, hickory nuts are simply pushed into the bottom nut holder.
