Before connecting this preamp to a turntable, flac player or standalone speakers, do the following: Loosen the front panel screws. Look inside and you will see a switch. This is the GAIN switch. It is set to HIGH. Use a screwdriver or something to gently pry it away from you. This switches GAIN to LOW. If you don't, you will surely be confused and angry, and your ears will hate you. 4. Plug in all and turn on. Note: Don't worry, these are incandescent bulbs and need to be warmed up. So give it about 10 minutes for a warm on-the-go sound. However, I've made these upgrades and tweaks and this device is amazing for the price. Even on flat sounding records they all sound amazing compared to any preamp built into a turntable. I hear sounds like guitar picks, percussion, and even vocal breathing that I couldn't hear on the preamp. I don't want to break the bank with something insanely expensive, I would choose this. It also looks beautiful. I can go to the next level if I take another turntable. I am very impressed.
