Review on πŸŽ’ Lightweight Packable Travel Climbing Backpack - Waterproof Design by James Roberts

Great Value, Terrible Zippers

I took this pack on a 3 day 70 mile hike up the Laurel Highlands Trail in western Pennsylvania. On the first day the weather was fine for 24 miles. Although the backpack was extremely light (just over 2 pounds), it securely held everything I needed - 25 pounds including total water. My shoulder straps were not adjusted well and the backpack was too heavy. So I had severe pain in the upper parts of my shoulders. If you don't adjust this thing properly, you're going to get hurt. Even then, it was generally comfortable to wear all day long. Rain began to dump the remnants of the tropical storm overnight. Temperatures dropped and conditions were absolutely terrible. I was able to test the waterproofness of this backpack and it did very well. The rain cover worked for the most part, and the inside of the pack didn't feel wet (although I sealed EVERYTHING in ziploc and stuff sacks). Several inches of rain hit the area in the morning and I was able to ride another 7 miles before conditions became too dangerous to continue. My biggest concern is the quality of the zippers. If you overstuff the compartment and try to close it, the zipper will likely come undone. The front pocket zipper was the first so I had to redo the interior of the main compartment to match what was in the front pocket. But hey, at just over $30 this thing is an absolute steal. Can't comment on the durability of this backpack yet as I won't be using it more than a couple of times a year, but for the money I don't trust a newbie "once in a while". Tourist can be wrong. I will be doing the same hike again next year as it is an annual event and will likely use this package again. I have different hardware and this pack still includes everything without too many issues. I managed to straighten the front zipper enough to use again. I will definitely only put small things in this bag and not overfill it. I only wear this backpack during workouts, but it's still quite comfortable when the straps are properly adjusted. This year I have a water bladder, no bottles, so let's see what happens. I'm training a lot more this year and plan to ride the full 70 miles. I will report this review after the hike in mid-September. UPDATE September 20, 2019: I've done all 70 miles this year and this package worked like a charm. I set it up correctly and packaged it strategically. It contained all my equipment and became part of my body, so to speak. It has retained moisture due to heavy sweating but I think that will be the case with any packaging. I still give four stars for several reasons. The pockets on the bottom straps are almost useless as they are too small to fit anything. Although all the zips are intact this year, they're still pretty flimsy. Eventually, the chest strap continued to loosen. I had to pull it every half mile or so to tighten it, which got annoying. The bottom line is that this bundle beats its price but tempers your expectations. If you use your backpack more than a few times a year, you should probably invest in a higher quality brand. But this one was perfect for my needs.
