Review on Tivoli Audio Model One AM/FM Table Radio, Classic Walnut, Lightweight 2.4 lbs by Micheal Looney

Revainrating 4 out of 5

My first impressions are good BUT the problem with the tuning knob became apparent

Rating changed from 3 to 4 stars: Update November 2018: I sent the original unit back about a year ago and have been using the Sangean SW11 ever since. But while the Sangean is a good radio, the vocals aren't very clear, so I bought another Tivoli Model One and it doesn't seem to have the drift and sticky tuner knob that the first unit had. I gave the Tivoli another chance because it was on sale at the same price as the Sangean. For any music with vocals, the sound of the Tivoli surpasses my ears. Edited after one day of use. Going from 4 stars to 3 stars I see an issue with the voting button which will likely force me to return the device. See For #4 and Against #4 for more information. Now I have both Tivoli Pal BT (about a week) and this One model (a day). My first impression is that it lives up to my expectations and the good reviews it receives. I mainly listen to an FM station (WFRS) in Smithtown, aka Family Radio, and 710 (WOR) in New York. I live in Suffolk (Long Island). Pros: 1. FM is great (words in music are very different from music). Even better than PAL. Lots of sound for my apartment. 2. Built-in FM antenna is ok, but it is better with cable, the signal is more stable. 3. Durable construction. Quality replacement parts. 4. Smooth control. (See cons below) 5. Super easy to use. No frills to confuse. 6. I would describe the sound as crisp and fairly full FM for such a small speaker. 7. Looks great on my bookshelf. Cons: 1. AM doesn't work for me (while PAL is fine). But I think it's primarily because I keep the Model One in one place while I can move the PAL. I'll buy a small external AM antenna to move around to see if that helps. 2. While an FM wire antenna suits me, I think radios in this price range should be fitted with a nicer dipole wire antenna. 3. Not cheap for an AM/FM radio, although this $111 beige model isn't too over the top. 150€ is too much. 4. After a day of use I noticed a binding of the tuning knob past 100 stations on VHF, the knob stays smooth but becomes uncomfortably stiff for the rest of the dial. Is the problem lubrication or mechanical? I've tried turning the knob back and forth quickly on the dial many times, but the rigidity stayed. With PAL BT I don't have this problem at all, the dial is smooth with the same rigidity.

Pros
  • Dimensions 8.375 x 4.5 x 5.25 inches (W x H x D); 1 year warranty
Cons
  • Not sure
