First I decided to get a humidifier to get rid of a stuffy nose at night. Little did I know how much this would help my dry mouth. After a little research, I settled on the Crane humidifier. I liked that Crane uses BPA and phthalate free plastics and silver technology in their plastics. I had a few questions about the product so I called the company directly and found them very helpful which influenced my decision. Although this humidifier takes up a lot of space, it is quite lightweight compared to many others. I have cervical spine compression, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel in both hands, so the weight of something I have to lug around to and from the bathroom every day was a big factor. I only turn on the humidifier at night and every day, yes EVERY day I drain both the reservoir and the pool. It's a big pain, but it's a lot better than growing mold and bacteria. Once a week I clean the tank and pool with a mixture of white vinegar and water as directed by the company. I haven't had any problems with bacteria or mold. The only issue with this humidifier is the quality of my water. This is an ultrasonic humidifier and using hard water may result in the formation of scale and white dust. Scale is a white scale deposit inside the humidifier due to the presence of minerals in hard water. Limescale is not harmful, but too much deposit reduces the effectiveness of the humidifier. Cranes sells a demineralizing filter that should help but needs to be replaced monthly. Using distilled water will get rid of scale completely, but it can be very expensive. My water is moderately hard so I don't have a lot of scale or white dust, but they do. Scrubbing the areas inside the humidifier where scale builds up with a toothbrush and white vinegar seems to do the job for now. My only real problem with white dust is on top of my humidifier, in my ears. For now, simply wipe the area with a paper towel dampened with white vinegar. I think as long as I do this weekly I don't need a filter or distilled water. I wanted to mention this though because if you are new to moisturizers and haven't done your research you could be quite confused or frustrated. Overall I am very happy with this humidifier and it meets my needs. Oh and it's beautiful! Why put an ugly chunky box on your bedside table when you can fit an owl, elephant or dragon?
