Review on πŸ“· Canon EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR with 18-55mm STM Lens: Powerful Photography Companion by Jesse Runninger

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great entry-level DSLR with advanced features

I'm a casual photographer who travels a lot and wanted to take my SLR with me. I also want to improve my photography as a hobby, although I have no plans to ever become a professional. Before this camera I had several compact digital cameras. Size: Although I knew what I was ordering, I could not go over the size. It's so small for a DSLR and so light. I checked several times because I didn't think it was loaded in my pocket, it seemed empty. No kidding, it's such a light weight. But still has all the necessary buttons, conveniently located and easy to use. It also feels strong and durable, so don't let the light weight or small size put you off. Not sure if some are concerned that it's "too small" to hold. It is very comfortable. If you shoot 2 hours straight and/or have been shooting with a larger camera for 5 years, it may take some time to get used to it. But it's very easy to control, comfortable to hold and feels secure in hand. Performance: I've been experimenting with different settings, different creative shots for a few months now and I love the camera. All errors are definitely mine as an amateur. It shoots easy, is fairly fast (I don't shoot for the NHL), and produces accurate, colorful shots only limited by my creativity. I've shot macro, landscapes, architecture, animals and portraits. I love it. It has a deep, feature-rich set of user options, menus, and settings. I've become almost addicted to uploading my amazing photos to photo posting software (name omitted) and playing with them to see how amazing they can be. Aside from that, they (when properly composed) look incredible straight out of a RAW image. Also keep in mind that this is Canon so you can use almost any lens they've ever made. Video: Improved AF focus and improved STM lens are evident when shooting videos. Video is remarkably sharp, and autofocus handles most subjects well (again, not NHL or animal night shots). The combination of touchscreen and near-silent lens is a huge improvement over previous versions. All but the most demanding of professionals will find that it does a wonderful job. Cons: Seriously, not much. No built-in stereo microphone (minor issue, use an external one). There are some more technical reviews. I figured ease of use from a consumer perspective would be most useful. My advice: be very wary of some overly technical Revain reviews. Some reviewers don't know as much as they are letting on, citing false facts such as the fact that this camera uses "contrast phase detection" for autofocus. Wrong, the old guns did, not these. If you really want the technical details, read the dpmag report, dppreview, Camera Labs, etc. They will be accurate, not a pseudo-professional opinion. Good Hunt.
