I bought this to see if I could reduce my neighbor's Chihuahua barking. My family suffers from serious sleep deprivation and the neighbors didn't respond to my polite request to quiet the dog at night. Every time he barks outside, I've blown it at the dog from about 40 feet away. To me whistling sounds like someone who doesn't know how to whistle while trying to whistle. That's very weak. I am 35 years old and have normal hearing. My children hear it very well and get annoyed when I blow on it. Just like the dog. A dog's response to a whistle depends on why it is barking. If he's barking at something, like children, cars, or a squirrel, the whistle will silence him. When he barks to get back in, which usually happens around here, he only gets him to bark some more to get off the whistle. Judging by how much this dog dislikes the sound, I bet this is a useful tool for training your own dog. It's important to note that I had to adjust the pitch until I found the one that made the dog stop. This may also work better since it is a small dog. I've read that larger dogs respond less well to these high-pitched whistles. Hope that helps!
