buy one size bigger. if your child is taller or even of normal build. If your child is small I would say true to size but if in doubt especially. Outerwear is only one size larger. The stitch quality is excellent and it's holding up. it's not as thick as you think. It's more like a thin windbreaker, but still very warm. The reason for me, Voight, was to lengthen the back, and dinosaur spines were an added plus. I wish the hood was that long but still the cutest! at an unbeatable price.
