Review on Samsung X5 Portable SSD 1TB Thunderbolt 3 External SSD - Gray/Red (Model MU-PB1T0B/AM) by Nicholas Lim

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best External Solid State Drive with Stylish Design and Fast Speed

Used the SSD for about 3 weeks, the experience is excellent. First of all, the design of the hard drive looks very elegant (the sleekness comes from the fact that the SSD type is NVMe, which is much smaller than a regular 2.5mm drive, an NVMe SSD image is put on top attached to the iPhone X for size), which is good. as it easily fits in your pocket when needed. The color with black and red looks very nice and thoughtful, and several F1 cars have been found that partially resemble the X5 model (except for all the branding). Now back to usage, the first time I run speedtest it shows 1891 Mbps and a read. The speed is 2243 Mbit/s, which is amazing, but let's assume that when the processor is newer, higher speeds can be achieved. When connecting the SSD to the Mac, the software could be installed, which in turn can be used to set password protection with AES 256-bit encryption, but even after several attempts the application does not recognize the hard drive as connected, which is frustrating is, but it might depend on the old Mac I'm using, so others might install it, and maybe it should be installed on Windows (but unfortunately I don't have a Win-PC with TBT3). In actual use, the files were copied to a total of 24GB and the copy took less than 2 minutes (1:47 accuracy), more than 8x faster than other HDs I've used before. I also added some video clips to X5 and then used iMovie to merge all the clips and exported back to X5, which took about 5 minutes and 32 seconds. When I ran the same clips from the internal SSD and exported them back to the Mac, it took over 15 minutes for the export to complete. So for any photographer this is a great addition as long as the processor gets the job done. Even with these high read/write speeds, the SSD stayed cool during export and never got hot. The file is around 10GB and it took less than a minute to copy, which is amazing. I also tested copying songs about 11GB in size and it was done in less than a minute, and when copying the same files to USB Type-C it took about 5 minutes while copying to a regular USB 3 lasted over 15 minutes. So it's easy to understand that nothing can beat speed. Also, I didn't know that the Surface Book 2 only has a Type-C connector and no TBT3. But most new Windows laptops now have a TBT3 connector, so you may need to upgrade your laptop soon. Pros: 1. Excellent transfer speed2. Durable3. Not heated4 Excellent design/appearance Cons: 1. Limited number of PCs with TBT32 port. Short cable
