I read a million reviews and tried to decide on a color but finally settled on natural henna thinking it was the least chemically modified. I'm black with black-brown hair with yellowish-gold highlights that falls several inches below my shoulder. Half a pack was enough for me. I used henna mainly for treatment and the color of my highlights is a huge plus! I mixed the juice of 1 lemon, some black tea, virgin olive oil, and medicinal coconut shea butter with henna powder. I left it on for about 2 hours and checked the stain on my skin to see the intensity of the color. I would suggest blending it overnight if you want a very rich, saturated color. I left it in my hair for 4 hours, covered with a plastic cap with a hole on top, then rinsed with water and shampooed 3 times. I noticed that the color has gotten a bit lighter since the first application. I really like the color and my hair looks smoother and thicker. I definitely plan to use it again. It was pretty easy and cleaning up was a breeze. The smell was a bit overpowering when mixed but I didn't smell it at all when it was on my hair.
