No side lighting

Before installing it I didn't realize that there is no side lighting as the light is blocked by a metal strip around the edge of the lamp. This provides less and different lighting than other lights that also illuminate through their sides, which reflect off other walls and surfaces to spread the light. I wasn't expecting this to make a huge difference, but it results in more directional lighting with sharp shadows rather than light being scattered and diffused. Now I'm looking for a replacement kitchen and will install it in another room.
