I bought this (size 8 med) for my average height 5 year old boy; It fits as expected with room to grow. A size 8 would be too small for my 9 year old boy who wears a size 10/12 but can still wear a size 8 shirt sometimes. I like its soft side (although not as Sherpa on the inside as on the outside) and it's super warm . WARNING. Do not play in a playground filled with wood chips. The first nursery he carried to school/playground came home COVERED in wood shavings! (Damn it, monkeys!) They don't dry out. You have to get them out and put everything else inside! However, I also bought a navy blue and, having learned our lesson, just didn't wear it in woodchip parkas. I can't speak to the grass because when he wore it outside this fall, he wasn't actually rolling in the grass.
