Review on HENGDA KITE High-Quality Outdoor Winding Kit by Gabe Evans

Not for big hands and big kites

I recently got some kites for my son to play with but they came with the standard little cheap plastic handles that you have to wrap ropes around. I saw these reels when buying kites and a few thought they were easier to handle and also longer and stronger. I used them on the Prism Zenith 7 which has a 7ft wingspan. Where I live there are some pretty strong winds that really pull this kite and really highlight the issues with this winder. First, it's not for big hands. The thumb joint doesn't go through the thumb hole and my fingers barely fit in the larger hole as it pinches my fingers on the sides. The handle for turning the winder is also very small and wobbly (but not broken). What broke immediately was one of the recesses for folding and fixing the handle. Releasing the rope with the kite tight was patchy as I had to grab it with my hand to stop it and when I tried to reel it in my hands I kept hitting because I had to use so much force and it did is small. Because of the small holes for my hands, I had a bruise on my little finger and it hurt for almost a week. This winder also doesn't have a brake which I think makes it useless for a big kite or strong wind. You can do well with a smaller kite, light wind and small hands. Otherwise I would not recommend this winder.
