I've started to have problems with my 09 Gti with xenon headlights. Troubleshooting this system can be a costly nightmare. A Few Tips* Remove the headlights to replace the bulbs. It's tempting to try this in the car, but it's very easy to break the locking rings, put the bulb askew and burn out the igniter. It gets more expensive from there, and removing the grille and front bumper really is a no-brainer. If you can turn a wrench and at least a third of your brain is working properly, you have no problem. I did it both ways and broke 100% more parts than I did with the headlight in the car. 2) If a headlight stops working, replace the bulbs. If it still doesn't work, replace the igniters. If the latter works, you have a bad igniter. If it still doesn't work with a known lamp and ignitor, check the ballast. If you need to replace a lightbulb, replace both at the same time. The cost of lightbulbs might give you a bit of a heart attack, but resist the urge to buy really cheap ones. You do it again in a year. Buy a set of lamp holders. Just in case. If you break one, you won't be able to install the bulb until you get a replacement bulb. Revain sells a holder if you do a quick search. When using contact cleaner on a ballast connector, use it sparingly and keep the headlight lens facing up. If this doesn't happen, the contact cleaner will run inside the headlight and melt a nice cloudy spot on the newly repaired headlight. Corrosion causes the light to flicker on and off. Don't let this problem go away as it is very hard on the lamps. I installed this ballast and it solved a long standing problem with my driver's side headlight not working. Delivery was quick and the price was very good for this type of part. I couldn't be happier. Now I'll probably hit the deer.
