Review on 🌞 Outback FM80 MPPT Solar Charge Controller - 80 Amp FlexMax 80 by Chase Hosea

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great Outback charge controller - but know what you get (and NOT get)

That's basically what it says, it's the Outback charge controller. If you have any outback gear, you are probably familiar with these devices. I bought this pup to hone my system's capabilities. I checked some numbers and found that under the right circumstances (cold, sunny days), both of my existing charge controllers could draw too many amps from the batteries. It was unlikely, but I didn't want it to happen at all - the circuit could explode and isn't covered under warranty as it's a wiring issue. So I figured I should get another charge controller and reconfigure my panels so that 12 are tied to each controller, which is way below the possible current limit. The device is fine and there are no problems as such, but I cannot give it. received a higher rating for two outrageous reasons: - It is NOT DECISIVELY obvious in the text, but it is a RESTORED UNIT. It is NOT covered under warranty judging by the fine print on the small piece of paper that came with this controller. There was no indication of this at all, and of course nothing was said in Revane's description. Don't know if Revain or Green Energy Direct (supplier) is to blame, but that's bad form - I'd easily pay more for a decent guarantee. BAD FORM Revane, really bad form. - This item has no data cable. A data cable is needed to connect it to your hub (hub 10 in my case) so it can communicate with the rest of your system and transmit data to your logging software of choice. My guess is that since it says nowhere in the description it's not missing, it's just not provided - which again is VERY bad form. Revain should clarify this and/or suggest a data cable to purchase with this. It just so happens I had a spare Cat5 cable so it works fine but not everyone will. Great hardware, great device, but there are definitely some issues that need to be corrected in the description and on the sales page, so it's clear you'll be buying again.

Pros
  • It's fine!
Cons
