We recently had a four day power outage so we turned on our old emergency radio to keep in touch with the outside world. We kept our old radio on the windowsill to keep it charged in an emergency, but found it only worked for ten minutes when we needed it in an emergency. Apparently the battery wasn't getting enough charge from a small solar cell and the only way to get the radio working was to turn the crank on the generator, which would give us another ten minutes of juice before the radio had to crank the crank again. Since our old emergency radio could only be charged via solar or start-up charging, it became unusable by the time we needed it. We started looking for a new bailout radio and were thrilled with the Running Snail's reviews and specs. Not only did it have a solar panel and clockwork generator like our old radio, but it could also be charged via a USB port or run on extra batteries. To test the run time, I fully charged the radio's internal battery and then added 3 AAA batteries to the auxiliary battery case. I then turned on the light to see how long it was before it went out. After 24 hours the light dimmed a bit but the radio still worked. The light lasted a total of 39 hours before going out completely. For comparison: With our old emergency radio, the light ran for around ten hours when new, and the radio at a low volume for about the same time. Over the years the battery in our old radio had deteriorated and would no longer hold a charge, rendering it useless in an emergency. The Running Snail has a much larger battery than our old radio, much better speakers and much more accurate tuning. We put our new emergency radio on the windowsill like the old one so that the battery can be charged via the solar panel. The benefit of the Running Snail is that even if the internal battery fails during an emergency, we can still charge the extra battery box with fresh batteries and have radio reception when we need it. Can I recommend Running Snail as an emergency radio? Well, the build quality is at least as good as the old Red Cross recommended radio we've had for 12 years, so it should last until the next emergency. Also, this radio sounds a lot better than our old emergency radio and extra batteries can be used if needed. So yes, I can recommend Running Snail. This is a cute little emergency radio to help you keep in touch with the outside world in an emergency.
