This unit is essentially an R1 stand, but with MUCH more stability and more freedom of movement (which is great if you're using an ultra slim portable Monitor). Also, the rear support pad that your tablet rests on is slightly taller (4.25 inches vs. 3.75 inches), so your larger tablets (like the iPad Pro 12.9) won't wobble as much. On R1 they don't tip over, but they do wiggle a bit when you squeeze or squeeze them. When folded, the R1 is smaller (5.5" long x 1.125" high) compared to the new stand (8" long x 1.5" high); however, the new stand feels "thinner" as the hinge stem is 75% thinner. All in all, if you're looking for total portability and inches of the road, the R1 is probably your go-to.It's lighter and smaller and I got it to support iPads and portables LED monitors. But if you just want something minimal for your semi-permanent desktop then the new kickstand is for you. FYI. Mine had a few scratches on the kickstand but my iPad hides it when installed. So I didn't care It might be what Satechi does for their AMAZON STORE sales versus the stuff you buy direct from their website.
