Review on πŸ”§ Shimano CS-HG31 Altus Cassette Sprocket by Michael Vargas

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A lot of bang for your buck

This is a budget Shimano 8 speed cassette. This basically means it's heavier and not as pretty as their higher tier parts. I installed it on my "utility/commuter bike" for which aesthetics and (light) weight are not high on my priority list. What matters to me is the performance and durability this part is sure to give you. There are various special tools that will work for the installation. I used a chain whip and a cassette lock ring remover, which are also good tools if you ever need to replace a broken spoke. Shimano is known for delivering very good performance across the entire parts spectrum, even on the low end. While this cassette might not win awards for its use of exotic materials, its light weight, or its "bling," it will help you achieve positive and crisp shifts at a low cost, and it's built to last. To me, that makes him a winner. Ideal for: commuter cycling (journey to work, etc.), general cycling (shopping, running errands, cruising around town), everyday (for fun) or fitness cycling. Not recommended for: racing or equestrian competitions (triathlon, duathlon, time trial, road racing).

Pros
  • Great stuff
Cons
