I saw on youtube how a good scanner can show you exactly where the problem is and I decided to buy it. But I couldn't justify the cost of a home mechanic alone. I worked on one of our cars and took it to the SMOG test in California a week later. It went wrong. 50 dollars in the hole. Has never let me down so now I have a reason to buy a scanner. I did some reviews and settled on D7. Cheapest with features like scan tools that cost twice as much. And three years of free updates. It will do everything I expect to verify except the ECU programming and I don't want to mess with it. Oh turns out the car was broken due to the P1000 code, the EVAP test didn't complete. If the battery is disconnected, Fords have to redo all the tests and I haven't done enough drive cycles to complete them. D7 could have saved me from a failed test.
