First off, let me say that if I could give this product negative stars I would. I've seen these protrusions on thousands of rat/guinea pig pictures. /chinchillas and I have heard many owners praise their own saying they have been caged for over 5 years. Apparently sometime in 2017 Kaytee changed the way they were made and now this product is not something you will NEVER want to put in a small animal crate. They stink. Not with the slightly sulphurous smell that natural pumice has. No, it smells like it had the sad fate of being buried in your 110-year-old great-grandmother's dresser, which in ten years no one has dared open, mostly because they're afraid to confront what it tries to live in it, and that many years ago attempts were made to gasse this horrible creature, bury it in mothballs and lock it up somewhere in the basement, packing it so tightly that the horrible creature could not escape its inevitable death . Naphthalene solution as it forms, because the whole synthetic pumice brick gives off that unpleasant greasy smell. At first I thought it was paint and tried rubbing it off, but no, when one of these crumbled in my hand during the cleaning process, it became pretty obvious that the entire sim was saturated with this toxic, smelly chemical. An added bonus was that they can't stand to rub off piss and poop! The toxicity these ledges leach can quickly fill a closed cage and put small animals at risk for all sorts of medical problems and I shudder to think of it. What would they do to an animal's digestive system if they were blind enough to actually chew these things? Add to this the real possibility that they will just collapse under the animal and fall to the bottom of the cage and I would advise anyone to just build a platform out of poplar wood, screws, washers and wing nuts. Beautiful colors in a photo-worthy cage are not worth your pet's health and safety. A complete waste of money and a disgrace to Kaytee for putting their dollars over the safety of their products.
