The technically minded argument that these headphones have unusually high impedance certainly played a role in my experience. Straight out of the iPhone, the frequency response is *very* sensitive to loudness: to my ears, anything below 50-60% suffers from attenuation. (The mids and highs, in particular, fall off precipitously at moderate volumes.) While other reviews note that the VE Monks don't block sound as well, I find this desirable: old style, no ear canal. - Earbuds allow you to leave them on and just turn down the volume. I can't comment on how these guys perform in a stationary, solo, and extended setting, but I bought them hoping they would be a walking couple used only with the iPhone. The Sennheiser MX 365 is *very* worth the extra $4 to service my favorite destinations.
