Review on Smooth On SOEcoflexGel Ecoflex Gel Trial by Carol Miller

Amazing Stuff

I've used several Smooth-On products but this one blew my mind. Ecoflex Gel is a two part platinum silicone gel that is as clear as water! Usually most silicones including the original Dragon Skin and Ecoflex series are milky white, but this is the first fully transparent platinum I have. This should make coloring with fewer pigments easier and potentially more vibrant, in my opinion. Typical precautions when working with silicones: - Wear long-sleeved shirts and ensure adequate ventilation. - Wear nitrile (not latex) gloves. - Due to the incredibly viscous nature (similar to the liquid consistency of a shampoo), great care must be taken when pouring components A and B onto surfaces (experience there) - When generally it is possible to keep lower temperatures with platinum-silicone in the mixed state. This will prevent the material from curing into rubber as platinum silicone is heat sensitive (cures faster when heated). Spills can be cleaned up by adding a little of one of the components to the spill, depending on the size of the spill. Once the rubber is removed you can clean it. Well how does it work! I cast equal halves by weight as the cast was small, less than a few grams for this test. Previously, I made a dragon skin skin or membrane onto which the gel was applied and poured into a mold. You'll find it contains a TON of air bubbles when mixed, luckily it has a 15 minute pot life so you can degas in a vacuum chamber if needed or the bubbles will rise on their own. It hardens to a thick but sticky gel in 2 hours (maybe less since it was in a warm room). I recommend using a clean popsicle stick to test this as it will grab anything it touches! The icing will be soft and a bit sticky, but that's to be expected since it's a gel. After applying another coat of dragon skin, I was surprised at how it responded. The final encapsulated material is tough but super soft and begins to wrinkle like leather when squeezed. In a creeping motion, it slowly returns to its original shape. I have to test it with paint but for now you can leave it transparent if you have an opaque shade on the outer membrane like Silc-Pig White and nobody gets the wiser. Overall, I'm very excited about the possibilities. Material! I think next time I'll make a Dragon Skin FX Pro membrane to see how big a difference there is between the original Dragon and the DS FX Pro with that kind of mold. Forward!

Pros
  • Very Impressive
Cons
  • Boring Packaging
