Review on Olympus D-460 Digital Camera with 1.3MP and 3x Optical Zoom by Travis Filippi

Seems to be a good camera - I'm still learning - Read the manual

I just received this camera yesterday. This is my first digital camera. So far it looks like a good unit. I only found two things to complain about; 1> - The included batteries may cause some confusion if you follow the installation instructions. The battery polarity indicator on the bottom of the camera just doesn't match the polarity markings on the included Olympus batteries (i.e. they look like they're being charged with reversed polarity, which isn't great). The manual has diagrams for inserting individual AA batteries with polarity clearly marked (which matches the diagram on the camera) but the diagram illustrating how to insert the supplied batteries does not indicate the polarity!?!? Batteries are "keyed" so you can only insert them one way. After arguing with myself about conflicting information, I put the batteries in, the camera fit and works perfectly. Now I have to solve this problem again when using rechargeable separate NiMH batteries. Olympus really needs to rethink the instructions. I bet a lot of people have tried using separate AA batteries, loaded them in reverse and fried the camera. tsk tsk The main controller Olympus. I understand that Olympus batteries are very expensive. Maybe Olympus came to the conclusion that a little bit of misinformation can lead to bigger profits? The technically challenged can certainly resort to using only the Olympus brand to avoid problems? Matching #2> Of course you can use the USB port, but hey. I think you can't have everything. After reading the manual for a few minutes, I started shooting and so far I'm very happy with the results.

Pros
  • Elegant design
Cons
  • Minor problems
