Cable ties can be painful to handle, plastic or steel. In addition to damaging fingers, strain is always a problem. I have a chicken coop that uses plastic ties to attach the fence to the posts. I figured this wasn't the best long-term solution since plastic weakens in direct sunlight (particularly in the southeastern US), so I found metal zip ties. Bonus! They're a bit slick and I quickly realized that metal straps would put more strain on the arm, so I went with those instead. This works well with longer ties, shorter ponytails don't work so I still need pliers for this. Remember that the tension design is designed to pull the tie tight, not tight, leaving it a little loose in case you need to cut it later without damaging what it's tied to. Overall it works great, just wish I could use it with shorter ties.
