So that it stays in place and does not stagger.

I've had the holder for about 5 months and can't say it's disappointing. Well, with that being said, it does have its downsides, but they're not that big of a deal. The phone rattles when driving, but is very convenient. It is also not suitable for phones with heavy cases. Otherwise the holder fulfills its task as stated. Overall a good buy in my opinion.
