I couldn't do it with a ripper or my other scissors. These scissors are perfect for small projects and details. They are easy to use and don't cause hand fatigue when cutting, even if you have arthritic hands (like mine). This is the perfect pair of scissors for sewing and crafting. Only for large projects they are NOT suitable. I wouldn't use them for cutting out a dress pattern or gift wrapping - you need longer scissors to cover a project like this. I also decided I didn't want to risk them on shiny paper, cardboard, or pipe cleaners (because of the metal), although I'm sure they cut great.
