Review on πŸ–¨οΈ Seiko Smart Label Printer 420: High-performance Printing for Win/Mac OS - 2 1/8 Wide Prints by Viswanath Lopez

Decent label printer

My workplace uses Seiko 420 and 450 label printers to print address labels and Code 39 barcodes at the maximum height supported by the printer (i.e. small 1.13" x 3.5" addressable labels ), also with roll guide labels. When the printer is in a vertical position, the output tends to either skew to one side of the label or print outside the physical edges of the label. Our solution to this problem is to turn the printer on its side. This usually helps keep the output straight. The SLP 450 seems to hold labels better than the 420; So 450 is a bit harder to troubleshoot when labels are misfed. We had no trouble using the included SmartLabel software to print individual labels, although we typically use Microsoft Word or Excel to print multiple labels at once. I've found our printers sometimes have a hard time setting up their label printers, but the trick is making sure the paper size, margins, and orientation (portrait or landscape) are set correctly. Overall, the SLP 420 and 450 printers are decent products. , although it can be a bit tricky to set up or troubleshoot for general users. The SLP 420 is slow when printing in fine mode (203 dpi) so choose the SLP 450 over the SLP 420 if you print a lot of labels daily as the SLP 450 is much faster. Perhaps Seiko could move the label guides closer to the pull feed in a future version of the product to ensure consistent output straightness. Seiko's latest label printers are a good fit if your shop already uses Seiko printers or compatible label printers. Your cost of ownership becomes competitive with Brother label printers when Seiko printers are combined with high capacity rolls (some require an external label tray).

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Everything is fine
