We started the cloth diaper at 15 months because our baby used 7 diapers a day and 1 nap. I figured it was worth the investment as we have about a year left to change and it never hurts to save money but you can certainly start sooner. I bought an Alva diaper to try at night and then bought it when I realized that 1) they would save us a lot in the long run if we switched to daytime and 2) they weren't that heavy are to be cleaned. And I'm so glad I switched! We use dual earbuds for sleeping and sleeping (that gives us 3 hours of sleep) and single earbuds for relaxing (mostly) at home. I still use disposable nappies when we go on tour because I don't want to carry around wet nappies, but this has greatly reduced the amount we buy (maybe 2 a day). to the toilet, flush the remaining hose and hand wash each diaper in hot water after each use and occasionally use dish soap at dawn if there is a stain/hard-to-remove residue and hang overnight. I do this right after each use. Then at night I wash them with cold water and non-enzyme detergent and hang them to dry. Sometimes I soak them in baking soda or vinegar during this wash to get rid of the bad smell and I always do an extra rinse at the end to get all the detergent out of them. I wipe diapers to make sure they don't smell so we don't risk a rash from the detergent. We definitely had some poops that were so big I considered throwing the Alva away, but I thought it was good. Hand wash to remove everything, then soak in oxygen cleaner and hot water, then use baking soda/enzyme free detergent overnight and give an extra rinse to remove odors. We are 3 months old and the diapers still look new and always ready for the morning. I cannot recommend this product enough!
